Kontextus designs a sleek and unpretentious building within a harsh environment.<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s only logical that an architectural firm called Kontextus draws its inspiration from the spirit of the place. With this building, the firm clearly demonstrates that this doesn\u2019t mean contemporary architecture can\u2019t be realised here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Biofarm, built in 2023, is located on the edge of S\u00e1rospatak, a town of approximately 11,000 inhabitants located in northwest Hungary, just south of Slovakia and about 70 km from the Ukrainian border. The town of S\u00e1rospatak, which literally means \u201cmuddy creek\u201d, is known to Hungarians for its castle, which is depicted on the 500 forint banknote. The region is also known for its beautiful underground wine cellars, known as K\u0151porosi Pincesor. These characteristic grass-covered wine cellars in the village of Hercegk\u00fat have even been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2002.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just south of S\u00e1rospatak, below the meandering Bodrog River, lies a compact agricultural complex of several halls, silos, and storage garages amidst the vast, fertile fields. The site doesn\u2019t have a central farm run by a farming family, but rather has the feel of a business complex or perhaps a small sovkhoz<\/em>, a collective state farm. Most of the buildings are simple, straightforward, unadorned corrugated iron halls. In this cold and impersonal environment, the architects at Kontextus sought to create a pleasant, human building. As the architect G\u00e1bor Kovacs explains: \u201cIt was a direct commission from the client. The aim was to replace the existing run-down service building with a new building that would reflect the site and its environment.\u201d The new building, measuring just under 300 m\u00b2, is intended for farmers working the land, several office staff, and the site security guard. The building\u2019s location near the complex entrance allows the security guard, from his office in the northwest corner, to have a clear view of all the vehicles entering and leaving. The site manager\u2019s office is located in the northeast corner, next to the entrance. His office is deliberately positioned near the main entrance and the various meeting rooms. In southeast corner is the weigh house office, which offers a clear view of the weighing platform in front of the building where trucks entering and leaving are weighed. The west fa\u00e7ade houses several offices for financial and administrative staff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
